Born in Jaffa on 24 Nov. 1933 into a Christian family; grew up in Jaffa and Jerusalem; was forced with her family to leave Jerusalem during the 1948 Nakba and went to Birzeit, the family’s hometown; graduated from Birzeit College in 1950; earned a BBA from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, in 1954; returned to the West Bank and worked as Exec. Secretary, Registrar and Director of the women students activities at Birzeit College from 1954-1960; won the Jordan Women’s Table Tennis Championship in 1957; was involved in voluntary work since the early 1960s, incl. assisting the visually impaired at Helen Keller Society (1965-67), and serving as Sec.-Gen. in Birzeit’s Business Dept. (1974-79); Sec. of the Birzeit University Board of Trustees from 1976-2004; was the first Palestinian woman to be elected to the Church Council of the local Anglican congregation; moved to Jerusalem in the 1960s; became a Board member of the YWCA and served as national Pres. of the YWCA, Jordan, for two terms; Pres. of Rawdat Al-Zuhur School in Jerusalem from 1986-2003; was the first national Pres. of the YWCA of Palestine after its re-affiliation to the World YWCA, serving from 1991-96, and its representative to the National Council from 1999-2002; treasurer of the Board of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center, Jerusalem; member of In’ash Al-Usrah Society, Ramallah, the Union of Palestinian Women in Jerusalem, and the Project Loving Care Society, Jerusalem; writes articles and columns for a number of magazines and electronic media outlets, incl. A Globe of Witnesses.
