Born in Nablus on 28 June 1957; received a vocational training diploma in Engineering (health and safety on work sites) from the Qalandia Training Center in 1978; is officially active with technical unions since 1978; served as Exec. Committee member of the Construction Workers’ Union in Nablus; worked in the Engineering Dept. of Nablus Municipality; became technical supervisor in An-Najah University in 1979; founding member of the first Workers’ Union at An-Najah University in 1979; also served as Secretary of the Assistant Engineering Provision Workers League from 1980-82 and the Union of Technical Workers since 1982; took several courses related to workers and public affairs; became Board member of the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) in 1982 and general coordinator of its branch in Nablus in 1982; member of Fateh; worked as coordinator in the Fateh Shabiba Workers Committee and edited its Al-Zaytoun Al-Akhdar (The Green Olive) page from 1982-87; was elected member of the PGFTU Exec. Committee in 1983, served as its Treasurer in 1985, then as Director of its Media and Public Relations Dept.; was elected Sec.-Gen. of the West Bank section of the PGFTU in 1987; was detained several times by Israel and imprisoned four times for six months each for his associational work and membership in Fateh; was also banned from leaving Nablus during 1983-1987 and from traveling abroad until 1989; was a member of the Palestinian delegation to the peace talks and the Palestinian Nakba Commemoration Committee; serves as Sec.-Gen. of the PGFTU since 1994; Pres. of the Palestinian General Wood and Constructions’ Workers Union; active in the Fateh Emergency Council and member of the Fateh General Conference; member of the PNC; Board member of the Prisoners’ Rehabilitation Center and the Center for Vocational Rehabilitation of the Handicapped; is also active in the International Labor Organization (ILO) and other labor organizations across the world; serves as Director of the Sawt Al-Amel (Worker’s Voice) newspaper; is also member of the Palestinian constitution consultative committee and active on issues related to Palestinian labor law.
