Born in Gaza on 1 Aug. 1959; received a BA in Law from the University of Alexandria in 1982; was Attorney-at-Law, at the Gaza Bar; went to Europe and the US for further education and received a Certificate in Insurance Management from the Chartered Insurance Institute, UK; went to the UAE and began his professional career working as Field Representative of the American Life Insurance Company in Abu Dhabi from 1982-83; then became Head of Life Dept. at the Arab Insurance Company in Abu Dhabi (1983-85) and Development Manager: United Insurance Company, Sana’a, Yemen (1985-87); returned to Palestine in 1987 and began to build his commercial practice; senior partner Sharhabeel Al-Zaeem & Associates since; was a legal advisor to the Palestinian Delegation in the peace talks during 1992-93 and, following the DoP, became a member of the joint Palestinian/Israeli Legal Committee, as well as a legal consultant for many Palestinian negotiating committees; served as Regional Manager for the Arab Insurance Association, Gaza, in 1993-94 and as Deputy General Manager for the Trust International Insurance Company in 1994; included alternative dispute resolution techniques to his legal services in 1995 and participated in several training programs, incl. at Harvard Law School in Boston and the International Center for Arbitration in Texas, earning certificates in International Arbitration, Industrial Relations and Labor Dispute Resolution, Commercial Arbitration, Commercial Mediation, and Dispute Resolution Systems Design; member of the Yale Law School Steering Committee for Middle East Studies since 1995; is a member of the Arab Society for Protection of Intellectual Property; became an internationally listed arbitrator and trainer of arbitrators; practices mainly as attorney and arbitrator with banks and insurance companies, and as legal consultant to UNRWA, several Representative Offices to the PA, and international companies; has been ranked as the leading lawyer in Palestine by Chambers Global (The World’s Leading Lawyers) since 2000; member of the Palestinian Bar Association and the American Bar Association; serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abraham Center in Gaza and of the Association of the Development of North Rimal; member of the Board of Directors of the Humanitarian Association for Human Rights in Gaza, PALTEL, and the Palestine Industrial Estate Development Co. (PIEDCO); Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children; Board member of Al-Aqsa University in Gaza; Secretary of the Palestinian-Japanese Friendship Association and the Patient’s Friends Benevolent Society; Commissioner General of Communication at the Union for Palestinian Youth; has published several papers and studies, incl. Business Laws and Economic Prospects in the MENA Region (Palestinian Authority Section), Legal Aspects of Doing Business in Palestine (with Mazen Qupty, 1995), and International Commercial Transactions in the West Bank and Gaza (Center for Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector, University of Maryland, 1996).
