Born in Sair, Hebron, in 1942; received a Barrister in Law from Damascus University; joined Fateh Tanzim in Oct. 1962; worked as a teacher from 1963-67, among others at the Khalil Al-Sakakini School in Jerusalem, Haditha School, Al-Shona Al-Shamaliyya in Irbed, etc.; left his teaching posy and turned to politics in 1967; member of the Fateh Revolutionary Council in 1970; became PLO representative to Yemen in 1974; in 1986, worked with Mahmoud Abbas at the PLO Dept. of Arab and International Relations in Tunis; became a PNC member in 1986 and a Fateh Central Committee member in Aug. 1989; headed the PLO’s ‘Lebanon Committee’ as well as the PLA’s Political Commissariat; became Secretary of Fateh’s Committee on the Occupied Territories after the assassination of Khalil Al-Wazir in 1988; PLO Central Council member; was opposed to Oslo from its outset, but remained loyal to Pres. Yasser Arafat; returned to the Palestinian territories after 28 years of exile on 7 Sept. 1995; was elected PLC member (Fateh) for the Hebron district in the Jan. 1996 elections; was head of the PLC’s Parliamentary Monitoring Committee in 1998 as well as head of the Education and Social Affairs Committee from 1998-2005; has been tasked by PA Pres. Mahmoud Abbas with unifying Palestinian ranks in Lebanon, restructuring of Palestinian forces and promoting Palestinian-Lebanese relations in summer 2005; was subsequently appointed as PLO representative to Lebanon in May 2006.
