Born in Kufr Kara on 11 Jan. 1955; studied Pharmacy at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, earning a Ba, MA and PhD; was active in politics in the Arab Student Union while studying at Hebrew University; served as Dir.-Gen. of the Ahali Center for Community Development in Nazareth; was a member of the Arab-Jewish Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (Hadash); co-founder of Balad, the National Democratic Alliance, in 1996, and elected as its representative to the Knesset in the 2003 elections; has been working closely with the families of the 13 Palestinians from inside Israel, who were killed by Israeli forces in Oct. 2000 at the outset of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, in their efforts to take a legal case against the Israeli police and government; serves as Chairman of the National Democratic Assembly’s Parliamentary Group; is a member of the Knesset Committees on Science and Technology, Public Petitions, and Social Affairs and Health; has been a strong opponent of the Israeli law prohibiting the granting of residency or citizenship status to Palestinians from the OPT who marry Israeli citizens.
